Artist Statement
The spaces I create are intentionally ambiguous, providing a sense of stillness that allows the viewer a place to reflect on those that we experience today as a collective.
I have studied the masters throughout art history and have found great appreciation and inspiration. The largest influences for my work have come from Romanticism, Surrealism, and Contemporary Art. I also draw influence from my surroundings as well as the people and interactions I have with them.
In this work the scenes are somber, degenerative, sluggish, deprived, and tense. I have used motifs like European architecture for its ties to Romanticism and Surrealism. In addition, the architecture also holds a sense of permanence and solidity in contrast to the impermanence of the inhabitants. The human figures featured in the works are used as tools to convey emotion and drive narrative within the space, commonly accompanied by cherubs. I enlist the cherubs as helpers to pilot you through, or as a symbol of the human spirit and the forces that guide it. Cherubs, in my mind, have been responsible for the magical moments that take place when making my work, when things unfold naturally through the processes.
